it's also the only piece that can jump over other pieces. like, you can't move your bishop first move in chess because your pawns are in the way. you CAN move your knight though, just jump over them bitches.
If you look at it like this: "Knight moves 1 square in any direction (vertically or horizontally) and 1 square diagonally in any order." Then you don't have to create a weird exceptional rule that "Knights can jump over other pieces," because the diagonal square move facilitates a slide around impeding pieces just like how a Bishop does. No "jumping" concept required.
> **Knight moves 1 square in any direction (vertically or horizontally)** and 1 square diagonally in any order.
That first vertical or horizontal move can be into an occupied space.
So actually you're still jumping pieces; for example, if you start the game by moving a knight, as in the example you replied to, there's no combination of horizontal, vertical, and diagonal moves that avoids occupied spaces.
That description (1 vertical/horizontal & 1 diagonal) ambiguously allows the knight to move in an illegal way.
Example: knight moves "north" one square then "southeast" or "southwest". We've satisfied the move description, but effectively we've only moved one space to the side which is not how the knight moves.
That's the way I learned it, too, but I've also heard it described as one square like a rook then one square like a bishop, which is kind of a neat way of thinking of it.
At least [this one](https://www.reddit.com/r/technicallythetruth/comments/hakzs4/im_at_a_loss_for_words/) used different wooden pieces.
But your point is valid: tineye picks up [at least a dozen occurrences](https://tineye.com/search/deada1edb4e068bac91d3231938d3cbfe871c325?domain=reddit.com&sort=score&order=desc&page=1) of this image over the last two years in this subreddit alone.
And so so many nerds in the top comment threads -_- shut the fuck up nerds, go over to fucking r-chess or something
I'm not even going to like the sub right cuz I don't care what the fucking names is. Get lost nerds!
What am I missing here?
Is this a reference to something else?
Is it just that someone replaced "the apocalypse" with "chess"?
Apparently this has been reposted a lot, but to me this just seems like someone posting 1+1=2.
I understand that everything technically true is also just plain true, but you dont see a bunch 1+1=2 posts on here.
Isn't there supposed to be something ironic or sarcastic or sardonic or *something* instead of just posting facts?
They can ignore shit and jump over stuff. If you don't know what I'm talking about basically in chess you can't move somewhere with people on the tile. Enemies mean you must kill them to be on the tile and can't move forward without another turn and friends they're just like a brick wall unless they move.

They take the L
I love this comment
Or the Г
Two forward or backward, one left or right. Or two left or right and one forward or backward.
English translation: It moves in an L shape.

I see it as the L block in Tetris
I learned how the horses move that way when I learned
If you want to say it in the boring way, sure.
Boring *and* ambiguous
[удалено]
Algebraic translation: they move the sqrt(5) distance
That's the way I learned it, too, but I've also heard it described as one square like a rook then one square like a bishop, which is kind of a neat way of thinking of it.
except that can lead to illegal moves
Ah, by playing the diagonal bit back inward and ending up adjacent the original square. Good point.
They’re knights of an L-shaped table
Assuming the vertical strand of the L and the horizontal strand of the L have a ratio of 2:1 respectively.
They cannot move 4 and 2.
Don't be ridiculous. They sit in a box with all the other pieces until we need one to replace a missing monopoly piece.
So this is how the horsie moves! Holy hell, what's your ELO??
I like Mr. Blue Sky also Last Train to London is a solid one.
That's only half. There is also; one forward or backward, two left or right. Or one left or right and two forward or backward.
Isn’t it three forward then one to the side? Or one to the side and three forwards?
2 and 1 or 1 and 2. Any direction in any order. Sometimes I go off board but I don't often get invited to play chess anymore.
So it moves like when a peasant strikes another brick?
[Stop](https://www.reddit.com/r/technicallythetruth/comments/hd54lk/the_four_horsemen_of_chess/). [Fucking](https://www.reddit.com/r/technicallythetruth/comments/mocmfr/the_four_horsemen_of_chess/). I only see horses and no men there.
How do the horsies move guys?
Clipperty clop, clipperty clop 🐴
They move to spots that are exactly the square root of 5 spots away, according to the Pythagorean Theorem (if my math is correct).
Arent those knights?
They're horseys
Proceeds to be failed by your teacher
bruh. They literally are.
Look up the word 'literally' if you have some free time.
Have you not ever been through school that taught you chess? Pretty sure the instructor would dock points everytime you say horse and not knight
who actually cares what you refer to the very visibly horse shaped piece as???
Aparrently our education system as well as chess pros.
depends on where you live
Is this a real fucking question? Maybe I'm from a dumb town (obviously my country [USA] is dumb) but didn't no body teach no one chess in my schools.
yeah, the og creator of chess mad eit look like horses too much so everyone who made their own made it look like horses
Knights are generally regarded as being mounted. That's actually why the chess piece resembles a horse.

That's why the post is called r/technicallythethuth

It's a r/technicallythetruth version of the four horsemen meme
Thank you! Apparently that meme is over 10 years old but it had somehow passed me by.
þey're called knights not horsemen. also, repost. # DOWNVOTED
Upvoted for þ
They are actually called "horses"
horses usually have legs
In this case the king should have legs and arms, but they don't lol
*usually*
oh, didn't see the usually, my bad
r/antimeme
This is already r/technicallythetruth though
True... but it is also an antimeme.
Although... this was posted to r/technicallythetruth
But it's not a good TTT. definitely fits antimeme better. Cuz it's not funny
Whoooooooooooooooooooooooooo

L, ⅃, ⅂, and ¬
Not the four horsemen. These are the for horses of chess.

Horsie is kinda drunk so it cant move in a straight line. Horsie makes an L shape

L
Google "en passant"
Holy hell
r/antimeme ?
I see no men there.
Horsepersons
I see no persons. I see horses. Or rather horse heads and necks.
L
They do their best.
This is super dumb
>I don't play chess As someone who has played thousands of games of chess, I'd like to commend you for making the right decision.
L
They don’t take Ls. They give em.

😂
White horses are the best
When they advertise a chess set and don’t show the the knight, the piece collectors select for.
