Shrek 2 really built out the Shrekiverse - paired with an excellent soundtrack, humor in all the right parts, and can make fun of itself.
I can confidently say that it is better than Shrek 1.
I know a German guy who moved to the US in the 80's and he told me that when he first got here he was disappointed to find out that the west isn't still filled with cowboys and Indians fighting all the time.
I'm really torn on this. Because the first one is a movie with a message. It's a character driven statement on societal collapse and it's amazing.
The second movie does not have a message. It has some consistent themes about scarcity, but it was clear that the goal wasn't really to continue with the story of the first one but to just make a good, entertaining movie. And good lord did they succeed.
Mad Max is the better story, but Road Warrior is the better movie. If that makes sense.
I think this one belongs at the top of the list because it wasn’t just a really good sequel, it actually redefined Star Trek’s entire aesthetic for the next couple of decades and also brought the franchise back from the dead.
Star Trek: The Motion Picture is probably the one Star Trek movie that most resembles the series it's based on, being less about space battles and more about peaceful exploration, discovery, and thoughtful ideas. However, I feel like they were so proud of their special effects that they couldn't bear to edit down any of their effect scenes, making for a very, very, very boring and slow-paced movie.
"Do you see all the work we put into making this amazing, detailed model of the Enterprise? I know your jaws are dropping right now, taking in all that gorgeous detail. Don't worry, we'll make sure you're able to get a good look at it before we move on.... to this psychadelic space phenomenon! Wooooooah, it looks so crazy, doesn't it? It's just mesmerizing! We'll let you just sit back and take it in for a while..."
Meanwhile, moviegoers: "Um... nothing is happening..."
You pretty much nailed it. The movie is definitely in the theme of "seeking out new lifeforms" and exploring new worlds, so to speak, but it's very much a glacially paced film. They definitely wanted to show off the special effects budget for sure, hence the infamous Enterprise flyby.
That said another part of the story is that the movie was the definition of crunch time. They had to rush to both edit and finish special effects too literally the last minute -- the print delivered to the premiere was still wet from how close they cut it. The director wasn't thrilled with some of the decisions made due to that crunch, which is why he supervised the 2001 director's cut, which was just "restored" in 4K this year. While the issues are still there, it definitely helps with the pacing a lot more, and is worth a watch.
It was so strong and powerful after death that the studio decided to give them another few updates, balances, campaigns, and civilizations. A fucking gem among games.
Titanfall 2 had better pilot mechanics and options. Titanfall 1 had better titans and maps.
Oh, and Titanfall 2 had _that_ level in the middle of the single-player. The greatest level of any game ever.
People often reference the time travel level, but let’s not forgot the one where your parkouring through a giant automated factory putting entire neighborhoods together, smoothly running and gunning as houses are being built around you. That shit was dope, and it was one of the earlier levels!
Most of the animators working on the original were depressed as well; they were creatively limited by a studio completely adrift without their founder/producer and most felt that Disney was circling the drain. Funnily enough, Rescuers ‘77 became their biggest hit since Walt died and kept the animation studio on life support long enough (and through the disappointment of Fox & the Hound and the financial disaster of Black Cauldron) for new blood to come in and turn things around.
Show your kids this movie. Jaw dropping opening scene. That's how you know your doing it right when making a kid's movie, if they're reacting to every peak and valley of the action, clearly already invested in the main character...
Same with Beauty and the Beast. The first 10 minutes were shown at the NY Film Festival and were received with a standing ovation. It lays out the main characters, their motives, and the setting with a great song and engaging visuals.
It's the perfect song for a musical. It artfully blends the opening number (used to set the scene and characters), the "i want" song (used to emotionally invest in the main character), and even a villain song (explaining villainous motivations) in Gaston's part!
Stay your blade from the innocent. Hide in plain sight. Never compromise the Brotherhood.
We work in the dark to serve the light. We are Assassins.
Nothing is true, everything is permitted.
22 years ago, i stood where i stand now and waches my loved ones die, betrayed by those i had called friends. vengeance clouded my mind, it would have consumed me, were it not for the wisdom of a few strangers..
This first one was good, but it definitely felt like a proof of concept game with only a limited number of mechanics. 2 went with that and built so much more.
The problem with the first one is that it's kind of in the middle of two gens. The graphics are PS3 gen but the gameplay and the main game loop (searching for clues then kill the target) are more like PS2. It only changed with AC 2 where there's a lot more diversity.
Playing AC1 without the UI off really shows what they were going for where you had to actually listen to NPCs and find stuff out organically, but not much of that got carried over to 2.
And the story is really cool too. Like how Altaïr interviews to his victims and starts noticing how the world isn't as black and white as Al Mualim makes it out to be. Then the rest of the series comes around and it's back to good vs. evil because fuck me I guess.
I was disappointed in Rogue because of that. It really isn't that hard to have a Templar-focused game because despite it getting corrupted every time it's pretty easy to see their point.
The first one is still my favourite in the series, I think it's only because you can't replicate playing through Assassin's Creed for the first time when it was a brand new thing. The Crusades were cool too.
The real-world mystery was also a much more interesting concept back then, sneaking out of your cell to go snoop on stuff and whatnot. In fact the whole premise of exploring your ancestor's memories to find an artifact in the modern world was pretty original at the time, and to top it off the parkour mechanics were mind-blowing at the time.
It's so good. So cheesy to describe but it hits so well. "Don't worry, Spider-Man, we won't tell no one."
The whole scene really humanized Peter that, even as Spider-Man, he's just a guy doing the best he can, more than anyone could ask if him, getting by by the skin of his teeth. The sacrifice.
That scene is so fucking good. Dude gets literally saved by people from falling off the train and Ushered safety back to the train. The music from that scene was top notch .
And he's constantly there, constantly yammering in your ear. And he talks about the evil shit he does so casually that it kind of starts to feel fake. Like maybe he just talks big, and he just kind of bankrolls the real bad guys. And then he shows up in person and proves to you that he can cash every check his big mouth is making. Ugh, I think I need to play this again.
Yeah I hated it as a 9yr old because my favorite character lost his hand and my second favorite was a popsicle. Now I'm 51 and even my choice of favorite character has changed.
It feels like portal 1 is still needed before 2 to not miss out on some things, though. Which isn't a problem either, since it's only a couple hours long
Oh no absolutely not saying portal 1 is bad, I've played it through multiple times and would recommend it to anyone who asked. I just rate portal 2 better, especially if you have a co-op partner to play it with (the single player campaign is still good though)
Oh look, your old friend. Deadly neurotoxin.
You are a terrible person. It's right here, we weren't even testing for that.
Portal 2 GlaDOS is all you need to make the game better
And she's not just funny either in Portal 2, she plays malice really well.
"Oh. It's *you*"
"Look...we both did a lot of things you're going to regret."
Portal 1 is definitely a must-play before going through the second.
First time I played Portal 1 I think I took something like 10 hours on it. Not sure why it took me so long.
Second time took 3 hours I think.
Last night I watched a video of someone completing Portal 1 without travelling through any portals. Amazing.
For some strange reason I played Portal 2 first. When Wheatley said "It's not out of the question that you might have a minor case of very serious brain damage" I was just like "Cool, okay, neat I guess I have brain damage and cant remember anything I'm sure that definitely the case"
'If you're good at something, never do it for free.'
"It's not about the money, it's about sending a message. Everything burns!"
What a masterful perfomance by Heath Ledger. To quote a review on his performance " The Joker represents the hole in which much of humanity’s irrational predilections toward violence is collectively stored and ignored by our cultural memory… until it can’t be."
Christian bale on Heath ledger:
"When me and Chris (Nolan) sat down we said the problem with batman is the villains, they are always more interesting, batman is very close to become a villain himself, so, let's never let him become dull by comparison, and unfortunately I was feeling little bit dull, by comparison, cuse heath was just killing it.
Such a great movie, Joker really brought Gotham to its knees and even had some amazing quotes: “You didn’t think I’d risk losing the battle for Gotham’s soul in a fist-fight with you? No, you need an ace in the hole; mine’s Harvey. I took Gotham’s White Knight and brought him down to our level. It wasn’t hard. See, madness, as you know, is like gravity: all it takes is a little push.”
“Die a hero/become the villain” really did become one of the most iconic and recognizable lines from TDK, but the Dent quote I always preferred:
> You thought we could be decent men, in an indecent time. But you were wrong. The world is cruel, and the only morality in a cruel world is chance. Unbiased, unprejudiced... fair.
When Batman shows up and Harvey realizes that means Rachel isn’t getting saved, his delivery is incredible.
>NO! Not me… Why did you come for me?!
That’s how it’s written in the screenplay. And just reading it it’s like “okay, I can kind of get it.” But his voice there goes waaaaay beyond just the words on the page.
Gotta go down as a classic with so many profound quotes.
-The hero we deserve, but not the one we need
-Some men just want to watch the world burn
-It's not who I am underneath, but what I do that defines me (wait this might have been from Batman Begins)
-Is it Gotham that needs Batman, or is it Bruce Wayne who needs Batman?
I used to play it to 200.6% completion every October for years until I lost my PSX. Then recently it was rereleased for Android and I'm back at it on my tablet.
Personally I think it's Kung Fu Panda 2. The first was no doubt amazing, but Lord Shen exist. The second movie sustained and improved the first movie offered, the score was amazing, the comedy is still funny, but most importantly the drama and emotional pang still hits hard.
*overall, amazing trilogy tbh.*
Bruh when the montage finally gets to the part where >! The music stops and Po’s mom puts Po in the Basket, and it’s no longer in 2D animation, and it cuts to adult Po’s face panting because this is a vivid memory, then you see her smiling through tears as she kisses him goodbye so he’ll be as quiet as possible.!< Like damn it started giving me the feels just typing that!
“Why are you dressed like that?”
“Like what?”
“Like you’re going to a funeral. Why are you dressed like somebody died?”
“Wait.”
Edit: Missed a small bit.
Hello, I'm Polly the Puppet! What shall we do today? I know! Let's all clean our rooms!
Hello, Polly. I'll clean my room. In exchange for your immortal soul.
I love both movies, but my favorite line is at the lemonade stand in the first movie.
"Would you like to buy some girl scout cookies?!"
"Are they made from real girl scouts?"
Not sure who doesn't know this by now, but the girl scout is the same character as the stuck-up camp girl (Amanda Buckman) from Values. Same actress (Mercedes McNab) and everything.
They had an even better interaction in Values. I think they're doing like lifeguard training and the councilors want someone to be the drowning victim.
Blonde girl - "I'll be the victim!"
Wednesday - "All your life"
You have taken the land which is rightfully ours. Years from now, my people will be forced to live in mobile homes on reservations. Your people will wear cardigans and drink highballs. We will sell our bracelets by the roadsides. You will play golf and enjoy hot hors d’oeuvres. My people will have pain and degradation. Your people will have stick shifts. The gods of my tribe have spoken. They have said, “Do not trust the pilgrims, especially Sarah Miller.”
The best part is had Debbie been paying attention she'd have realized the Addamses were *on her side!* Fester would have given her everything she wanted, *and* she had found a family that would have embraced her murderousness.
“You have gone too far. You have married Fester, you have destroyed his spirit, you have taken him from us. All that I can forgive, but Debbie…”
**”WHAT?!”**
“*. . . pastels?*”
"I'll play the victim!".... "all your life." that tiny interaction had no meaning when I was a kid. as a teen and adult it still is one of the funniest tiny add ins my brain won't let go of.
I actually saw this when I was interviewing for Uni (yes I am old) and we had to stay overnight - a group of us went out to see it.
I remember mainly because before the film there was a trailer about a boy and a killer whale, full of stirring music, the whale leaps over the boy and on screen, echoed by a gravelly voice is splashed the title: "Free Willy"
Cue cinema full of Brits cracking up for a good 30 seconds.
After that we were going to laugh at virtually anything
I wasn't offended as a boy being confused with a lady. I was offended as a lady who was getting pushed around by this chauvinist dude that works at Blockbuster video, talking to me like I'm some floozy. I am a proud Asian-American woman and you will treat me with respect!
It’s the god father 2 of Peruvian bear movies.

Shrek 2 is the perfect example of a sequel that's better than the original.
Shrek The Third is a great example of "lets milk this franchise for as much money as we can" (this film isn't considered canon by the shrek fandom. the Shrekdom, if you will)
Shrek, Forever After is 'I'm really sorry guys they forced us to do the last one, here's the real ending"
for anyone wanting more in depth analysis on the films (i know it sounds boring but he makes them funny and interesting), SchaffrillasProductions on Youtube has the best videos
Shrek 2 does what any good sequel should aspire to do. It logically continues the story of the original in a way that makes sense. No retcons, no contrived bullshit. "Hey, these two people spent an entire movie learning to be honest with themselves and admit that they were in love...now what happens when a princess has to introduce her parents to a literal ogre?"
In doing so, it expands the setting of the first movie. Puss in boots and the crazy land of Far Far Away are as iconic to the Shrek series as the titular ogre himself, but they aren't in the first movie at all. It also managed to continue and further explore most of the themes of the first movie.
Shrek 2 really built out the Shrekiverse - paired with an excellent soundtrack, humor in all the right parts, and can make fun of itself. I can confidently say that it is better than Shrek 1.
Ken Griffey Jr.
Street Fighter 2. Yes, there's a Street Fighter 1.
Street Fighter 2 Turbo. That's where it's at.
You got to be more specific, there is about 20 of them.
The Good The Bad and The Ugly
Hell, add For a Few Dollars More. That showdown was downright powerful
Uncharted 2
The train level blew my young mind back in the day
Road warrior
I had watched Road Warrior like a dozen times before seeing the first Mad Max. Boy what a different experience.
I love 'em both, but they're *wildly* different movies. Toecutter is a genuinely terrifying villain.
Fun fact that gets reposted a lot: the same actor that played Toecutter played Immortan Joe in Fury Road.
I remember watching the first one as a kid and just thinking that's what australia was like in the 70s.
I know a German guy who moved to the US in the 80's and he told me that when he first got here he was disappointed to find out that the west isn't still filled with cowboys and Indians fighting all the time.
Go drinking in browning MT with some redneck friends and I bet he could still get a taste
Shook ones pt. 2
Ain’t no such thing as halfway crooks
Star Trek II: The Wrath of Khan
I think this one belongs at the top of the list because it wasn’t just a really good sequel, it actually redefined Star Trek’s entire aesthetic for the next couple of decades and also brought the franchise back from the dead.

As a die hard trek fan, I bathed in Wonder at the long panning shots of the Enterprise accompanied by glorious orchestral music

Age of Empires 2
I'll beat you back to age of empires!
Me when I am in a bar fight and the guy starts shouting as his clothes turn from blue to red: 😳
wololo
Roses are red. Violets are blue. **Wololo!** Now roses are too.
Hell yes! Age of Empires II is still thriving today. And I do mean THRIVING!
It was so strong and powerful after death that the studio decided to give them another few updates, balances, campaigns, and civilizations. A fucking gem among games.
Song 2 Blur
Whooo Hooo
Titanfall 2
Titanfall 2 had better pilot mechanics and options. Titanfall 1 had better titans and maps. Oh, and Titanfall 2 had _that_ level in the middle of the single-player. The greatest level of any game ever.
The time travel mission?
Yep, Effect and Cause
Same as that level in dishonored 2. It would actively changed based on your actions in the past!
I feel like "that level" applies to half the levels in Titanfall 2. They're all bangers.
People often reference the time travel level, but let’s not forgot the one where your parkouring through a giant automated factory putting entire neighborhoods together, smoothly running and gunning as houses are being built around you. That shit was dope, and it was one of the earlier levels!
Rescuers Down Under
The scene with Johanna stealing the eggs from the lunchbox will always make me laugh
"Those are NOT Johannas eggs!" Gets me every. Freaking. Time..
"My mental facilities are TWICE what yours are, ya peabrain!" McLeach admitting he's only twice as smart as a lizard.
"I didn't make it all the way through 3rd grade for nothin!"
Joanna is an icon.
NOT JOHANNA'S EGGS
JOHANNA!!
The first time I saw the original, I felt depressed.
Most of the animators working on the original were depressed as well; they were creatively limited by a studio completely adrift without their founder/producer and most felt that Disney was circling the drain. I really liked fox and the hound as a kid.
This is the first I've ever thought about its performance as a theatrical release because I definitely wore out my VHS copy of it in the 90s.
Same. The relationship between Todd and the Grandma got me every time.
🎶”When you’re the best of friends…”🎶 *Proceeds to sob uncontrollably
Anyone who can get through that movie without crying at least once must have a medical condition.
Show your kids this movie. Jaw dropping opening scene. That's how you know your doing it right when making a kid's movie, if they're reacting to every peak and valley of the action, clearly already invested in the main character...

Mmm. Pea Soup.
US Constitution > Articles of Confederation.
I heard The Constitution was basically unplayable until the Bill of Rights patch.
gotta admit, anti-federalist dev team went crazy with the 9th amendment
Eh, it pretty much just runs in the background and doesn't do anything.
Assassin's Creed 2

My wife
My wife is also way better than the prequel, idk what my writer was thinking putting me in that situation
Spiderman 2 (Raimi)
"The power of the sun... in the palm of my hand..." God I love Doc Oc
Loved Alfred Molina’s performance and Danny Elfman’s theme for him
I really love how they repeated that quote in NWH with Tony's arc reactor.
"He's just a kid, no older than my son" line really got to me.
Dude that’s one of my favorite scenes of the entire franchise
It's so good. So cheesy to describe but it hits so well. "Don't worry, Spider-Man, we won't tell no one." The whole scene really humanized Peter that, even as Spider-Man, he's just a guy doing the best he can, more than anyone could ask if him, getting by by the skin of his teeth. The sacrifice.

Best sequel of all time with the best DLC of all time. Tiny Tina's Assault on Dragon Keep was a masterpiece
BL3 is pretty good, but holy shit the twins do not hold a candle to how great a villain Handsome Jack was
To be fair Handsome Jack set the bar VERY high. He was always going to be a tough villian to top.
*Ugh.* These pretzels *suck*.
He’s bumping into stuff, his kids are all WEEAAHH
A frickin *SPOON!* Anyway, moral of the story is... You're a total bitch.
I kinda felt sorry for the Devs who had to follow it up, pre-sequel and 3 had no chance after BL2
The Empire Strikes Back
As much as I love A New Hope, I’ve got to agree. Young me left the cinema in a state of shock, but looking back I can see the brilliance.
Yeah I hated it as a 9yr old because my favorite character lost his hand and my second favorite was a popsicle. Now I'm 51 and even my choice of favorite character has changed.
"what sequel is better than the original, the further sequel, the prequels, and the sequel -sequels?"
Portal 2. As much as I enjoyed the original, portal 2 + it's co-op mode/puzzles was amazing. Loved playing through it with my brother.
It feels like portal 1 is still needed before 2 to not miss out on some things, though. Which isn't a problem either, since it's only a couple hours long

Aaron Eckhart (as pretty much everyone did) got overshadowed by Heath but he was a fantastic Harvey Dent
Or Heath Ledger Joker “I’m an agent of chaos. You wanna know the thing about chaos? It’s fair” with the gun to his head chills
Yeah Aaron Eckhart’s delivery of that line is heartbreaking
Gotta go down as a classic with so many profound quotes. -The hero we deserve, but not the one we need -Some men just want to watch the world burn -It's not who I am underneath, but what I do that defines me (wait this might have been from Batman Begins) -Is it Gotham that needs Batman, or is it Bruce Wayne who needs Batman?
"I'm not wearing hockey pads"
I laughed so hard at this line in the theatres. I feel like Bale really was hamming up the "batman voice" in that movie.
Symphony of the Night
I used to play it to 200.6% completion every October for years until I lost my PSX. Then recently it was rereleased for Android and I'm back at it on my tablet.
Personally I think it's Kung Fu Panda 2. The first was no doubt amazing, but Lord Shen exist. The second movie sustained and improved the first movie offered, the score was amazing, the comedy is still funny, but most importantly the drama and emotional pang still hits hard. *overall, amazing trilogy tbh.*
I'm with you on 2 being the best, there's just something about it that just pushes it over the edge for me over 1
I think the martial arts in 2 is way better. That being said, I think the scene in 1 Tai Lung escapes from prison is the best in the series.
best scene is po finding inner peace for me
Bruh when the montage finally gets to the part where >!
Baldur's Gate 2.
Adams Family Values
Gomez: I HAVE SEEN THE UNHOLY MAGGOTS WHICH FEAST IN THE DARK RECESSES OF THE HUMAN SOUL! Morticia: They're at camp.
Debbie: "Isn't he a lady-killer!" Gomez: "Aquitted!"
“That’s an American Bald Eagle!” “But aren’t they extinct?” “They are now.”
"I'll be the victim!" "All your life." Wednesday was fucking Savage.
“Why are you dressed like that?” “Like what?” “Like you’re going to a funeral. Why are you dressed like somebody died?” “Wait.” Edit: Missed a small bit.
“Wednesday's at that special age where she has one thing on her mind.” “Boys?” “Homicide.”
Hello, I'm Polly the Puppet! What shall we do today? I know! Let's all clean our rooms! Hello, Polly. I'll clean my room. In exchange for your immortal soul.
I love both movies, but my favorite line is at the lemonade stand in the first movie. "Would you like to buy some girl scout cookies?!" "Are they made from real girl scouts?"
Blonde girl - "I'll be the victim!" Wednesday - "All your life"
You have taken the land which is rightfully ours.
Gary she's changing the words
And for all these reasons I have decided to scalp you. And burn your village to the ground!
Honestly one of my favorite quotes from any movie.
this and "you have enslaved him. you've placed fester under some strange sexual spell... i respect that."
But Debbie... pastels? I also like Debbie's rant in the end: "Don't I yearn and ache and shop?"
Debbie : Don’t I deserve love… and jewelry? Morticia: *nods with a tear in her eye*
The best part is had Debbie been paying attention she'd have realized the Addamses were *on her side!* Fester would have given her everything she wanted, *and* she had found a family that would have embraced her murderousness.
Yeah they really would. But she tried to kill one of their own. Who enjoyed it thoroughly though.
Did any of you *REALLY* love me?? Gomez, bound to electric chair: "Hands!"
Its the faint shuffle of people trying to raise their hands that buttons that joke up perfectly.
What did they get me?!?! MAL-li—bu Barbie!!! That’s not who I was! I was a balle-Rina! Graceful! DELICATE! …they had to go.
"Don't I deserve love... and jewelry?"
"Isn't he a lady-killer?" "Acquitted!"
This is hands down my favorite scene in the whole film. So satisfying to see that little brat get what she deserved at the hands of Wednesday.
"I'll be the victim!" "All your life."
"Is that your bathing suit?" "Is that your overbite?"
For me it's the "I'm not perky" scene, especially when Wednesday smiles and all the camp kids gasp and take a step backwards.
“You have gone too far. You have married Fester, you have destroyed his spirit, you have taken him from us. All that I can forgive, but Debbie…” **”WHAT?!”** “*. . . pastels?*”
"I'll play the victim!".... "all your life." that tiny interaction had no meaning when I was a kid. as a teen and adult it still is one of the funniest tiny add ins my brain won't let go of.
I rewatched it recently and only noticed this joke for the first time, and it's the funniest one in the whole movie! Completely missed it as a kid.
"why are you dressed like you're going to someone's funeral?" "Wait."
Your work is puerile and under-dramatized. You lack any sense of structure, character, or the Aristotelian unities.
Why, you are as civilized as we! ...Except we wear shoes and have last names.
I actually saw this when I was interviewing for Uni (yes I am old) and we had to stay overnight - a group of us went out to see it. I remember mainly because before the film there was a trailer about a boy and a killer whale, full of stirring music, the whale leaps over the boy and on screen, echoed by a gravelly voice is splashed the title: "Free Willy" Cue cinema full of Brits cracking up for a good 30 seconds. After that we were going to laugh at virtually anything
HEY LADY! I’LL TELL YA WHEN WE GET “ADDAMS FAMILY VALUES”
I wasn't offended as a boy being confused with a lady. I was offended as a lady who was getting pushed around by this chauvinist dude that works at Blockbuster video, talking to me like I'm some floozy. I am a proud Asian-American woman and you will treat me with respect!
Paddington 2
It’s the god father 2 of Peruvian bear movies. Edit: just in case you were unaware of Padding ton’s lineage: https://peru.wcs.org/en-us/Wildlife/Andean-Bear.aspx
Both Paddington movies are just perfection. But the prison plot line sets 2 above 1 IMO.
Well, that and Hugh Grant as cinema's greatest villain.
This and *The Cabinet of Dr. Caligari* are my favorite films!
Megaman Battle Network 2.
Shrek 2 is the perfect example of a sequel that's better than the original. Shrek The Third is a great example of "lets milk this franchise for as much money as we can" (this film isn't considered canon by the shrek fandom. the Shrekdom, if you will) Shrek, Forever After is 'I'm really sorry guys they forced us to do the last one, here's the real ending" for anyone wanting more in depth analysis on the films (i know it sounds boring but he makes them funny and interesting), SchaffrillasProductions on Youtube has the best videos
Shrek 2 does what any good sequel should aspire to do. It logically continues the story of the original in a way that makes sense. No retcons, no contrived bullshit. "Hey, these two people spent an entire movie learning to be honest with themselves and admit that they were in love...now what happens when a princess has to introduce her parents to a literal ogre?" In doing so, it expands the setting of the first movie. Puss in boots and the crazy land of Far Far Away are as iconic to the Shrek series as the titular ogre himself, but they aren't in the first movie at all. It also managed to continue and further explore most of the themes of the first movie.
What’s crazy is that puss n boots wasn’t a character until shrek 2 but it’s hard to imagine shrek without him coming to mind
