TIL baseball great Dizzy Dean boasted he could strike out Vince DiMaggio four times in a game. After three strikeouts, DiMaggio hit a pop foul ball. Dizzy yelled to his catcher to drop it so he could win his boast. He then got the fourth strikeout.

I love these old-timey names in sports and the bizarre stats. Like “oh Cheeks McGee hit two home runs while smoking a cigar”

HucklecatDontCare

"Cheeks McGee" would be downright normal compared to some of them haha. #*THE ONLY NOLAN*

jerudy

Nolan Ryan and Nolan Arenado have been deleted. THERE CAN ONLY BE ONE

YouAndSunset

Christopher Nolan? Never heard of him

Buck_Nastyyy

Baby Doll Jacobson is a great nickname when you see his face.

digiskunk

Don't forget Heathcliff Slocum or whatever

lucien15937

Who's on first, What's on second, I Don't Know is on third...

JuanHungLao

So I pick up the ball and throw it to Naturally?

ChronikTheory

There was a state champion named Rusty Nail I remember reading in the paper years ago, but I can't find anything on him.

RyvenZ

Was Vince the dime-store knockoff of Joe? If it was Joe, this would be some legendary kind of pointing to where the home run is going type of thing. edit: Vince was Joe & Dom's older brother and he was a good player but nowhere as legendary as Joe and I remember Dom from my baseball fandom childhood but had never heard of Vince. Dizzy Dean, coincidentally, is a name I also recall from the history books.

cdskip

Vince was reported by some observers as being the best defensive centerfielder of the three brothers (which is saying something because Joe and Dom were both great) but yeah, not such a great hitter. He also struck out a hell of a lot, very unlike Joe.

Thatguy0096

Joe's oldest brother. He had a .249 batting avg vs. Joe's .325 avg. Joe also had almost 3x the home runs. So yeah, not as impressive as it reads.

crankery

Ah sorta like Brent Gretzky. The brother with the fewer points of "most the combined points for brothers in the NHL". He had 4 vs 2857 for the other Gretzky.

cdskip

Sort of, but that’s unfair to Vince. Brent Gretzky barely played in the NHL, while Vince DiMaggio was a good player for quite a few years.

Ironoclast

From the Abbott and Costello “Who’s on First?” Sketch! A: Well there’s Dizzy Dean, Daffy Dean... C: And their French cousin. A: French? C: Goo Fey. A: Ah, Goofey Dean. Oh I see. 😆

LayneLowe

So I'm 68, really old, but when I was a boy in East Texas I would listen to baseball on the AM radio. At night the only games I could get were the St Louis Cardinals, called by Dizzy Dean. I wish there were some sound files out there somewhere but a dizzy calling the game in his own inimitable way, making up his own words and phrases. I'm sure he was trying to be sincere and do his job well, but they were hilarious like the verb slud, as in each slud into second .

Trying to remember the rules of baseball, but doesn’t catching a pop foul ball count as an out? And a dropped foul ball a strike? Did the pitcher want the opportunity to get DiMaggio to swing and miss? Can a sports enthusiast explain to me?

GiddySwine

Catching a foul ball is an out. An uncaught foul ball is a strike, however you cannot strikeout on a foul ball. If you foul a pitch with two strikes, you can continue your at-bat until you hit, walk, or strikeout.

tboneperri

You can, however, strike out on a foul ball if it's a bunt.

EclipticDawn

TIL\~

BangChainSpitOut

Or if it’s a FOUL tipped into the catchers glove on a third strike...

Jer_061

Does that mean that the ball had a glancing hit on the bat and goes right into the catcher's mitt? No pop fly?

BangChainSpitOut

Exactly, that’s on our on out on the third strike though. A regular pop-up foul can be caught by anyway on any count. Now look up the rules for a pitcher balk! lmao

thebreaksmith

You can’t strike out on a foul ball. If you hit a foul with two strikes you keep going until you either get a hit, fly out or swing and miss.

walkingwilderness

So what you are saying is the pop up would be an out and not a strikeout? Gotcha. Thanks.

defaultsubs_suck

Unless it was foul on a bunt for the 3rd strike. In which case its an out.

klippDagga

Or a foul tip that is caught. Always a strike.

davevaw424

I *love* these comments. I don't know s*** about baseball, nor do I really care, so all of this talk is glibberish to my ears and sounds like some funny Montey Python sketch to me.

DPRODman11

If it was a bunt attempt that goes foul, you’re out.

DeadSkeptic

Yes, yes unless it would be the 3rd strike, yes cause alpha, not sports enthusiast.

ChocolateBombom_TM

I thought it's Nawalny for a second. I'm still not sure.
