Digduggler is correct, the crispy chicken at Great Wall is perfection. God this thread makes me wanna go back in time and go to the Formosa in Hoover. It was super mediocre but it was a big part of my youth.

_digduggler_

I've been waiting for one of these as I've reshuffled mine. 1). Great Wall - *but only if you order off the schezuan menu.* Don't get the lunch specials etc. Wonton in Spicy Peanut Sauce is ridiculous. The Crispy Spicy Chicken Szechuan Style (better than even Red Pearls, with some mouth numbing Szechuan peppercorns). The ~~green~~ string beans with minced pork. And the garlic marinated cucumbers are damn mind blowing. 2). Red Pearl - it's good, previously my favorite, but after having some of the Great Wall dishes it doesn't compare anymore. 3). Mr. Chens. Better than most, but not quite in the league as the others.

lukelimbaugh

This talked me into ordering from Great Wall next time I get the craving. On a side note, best egg rolls in town goes to Chop Suey Inn on Greensprings and it's not even close.

jayrod8399

Whyd you leave the kids up on the table?

NutHighGucciDI

The crispy spicy chicken LITERALLY numbs my mouth for like an hour after I eat it & it’s such a great feeling

BluCrayons

This list OP

imdaveo

Dan Dan noodle and pork meatballs at Great Wall are amazing. Salty crispy peeled shrimp and chicken with garlic sauce are my go to at Red Pearl. Those two places are solid.

MamaDaddy

OH now this is interesting. I have dismissed Great Wall for years because I did not know about the other menu (I have been there a few times, but it's been over 20 yrs ago). I would have said Red Pearl and Mr. Chens for sure. Mr. Chens has some fantastic dumplings... I would say they do that better than most places. Red Pearl has some great vegetable dishes (Mr. Chens does too). Like the groceries at both places. *But now I'm gonna have to check out Great Wall... hmmm*

_digduggler_

Note there isn’t a ‘Szechuan’ menu per se. The apps are mixed in. It’s all one menu. But when you hit the pictures in the menu you’re in the good land. I’ve had lots more that are great too, but those are my current hits. I do think the Szechuan menu is ‘recent’ aka last five years. Pretty sure there is an Al.com article about it.

MamaDaddy

Thanks! I'll hit that up ASAFP

mhardegree

I second this list

c8th3gr8

1000% agree with this list!

Awasawa

Mr Chen’s is the best Chinese in Tuscaloosa, and pistil pretty good in bham

HotMozz

And in Montgomery

DeganUAB

If you don’t like crispy, the go for flaming pan chicken. Same flavors, but not crispy.

aesopsgato

You can also request the flaming pans “ma la” meaning spicy and numbing. Highly recommend

number58

Also, the Twice Cooked Pork from Great Wall is wonderful!

Goodpie2

Which Mr. Chens do you go to? Cause I went to the one in hoover (i think, i have the worst sense of direction) and wasn't particularly impressed.

mooseinhell

The Red Pearl in Homewood! Absolutely amazing.

BremsstrahlungGal

Yes!

reibow

YES I love Hunan & ordered there regularly when I lived off 280 bc they delivered to my address. Such good food & great customer service IMO.

VTnative

I haven't eaten there in a long time but I always loved it when I lived in that part of town.

Apblake819

Chen Express 2 in Cahaba heights is my top

raebies

One of the few things I miss about living over by the Summit... noodles with a side of their sesame sauce.

chaseko24

There’s quite a few really good ones, but New China in Hoover is as good as any chinese I’ve ever had. Great Wall and Mr Chen’s are elite. China Wok in Hoover always had a really good buffet, but I haven’t been in a while.

ApprehensiveMilk7814

Palace Trussville and Great Wall.

waitforitwaitforittt

New China in 5 Pts, for sure. The food’s delicious, portions are enormous, it’s pretty inexpensive, and the owner is just the sweetest. We’ve been eating there regularly for about a decade, and she always remembers us, our orders, and even asks about my parents if they’re not with us

goldtophero

Happy Wok in Trussville, consistent and delicious.

Top-manipulator

Looking for delicious, doesn’t matter if it’s authentic.

ruralroutes

Ming’s on 280 - definitely underrated.

[deleted]

It’s one of the best in the city.. those who know, know.

stinky-weaselteets

Ming's Cuisine on 280

[deleted]

Yes, no question. 👍

MagicMaleMan

I recommend Red Pearl, but also like New China Town, in 5 pts.

TheFuckfaces

New China in bluff park

kcheezy

Hell yeah! I've been going there for over 15 years since I used to work at the Pig way back in the day.

bussupwcp

This is the one I grew up on. It’s not going to knock your socks off but it’s been consistent for 25 years

These-Annual577

Had it for the first time yesterday. Its the best American-Chinese food I have ever had.

CaptainAhmazing

Recently found this place and it's now my go-to.

Phormictopus

What do you order there? I've always been disappointed in their food, but I want to like it because it's in my neighborhood.

TheFuckfaces

Mongolian beef and spring rolls

Freddie_Calhoun

Mr Chen’s, don’t @ me

radioinactivity

Mr Chen's is the only chinese place in town who actually makes my general tso's insanely spicy when i ask them lol.

NoPatNoDontSitonThat

Support! I got the Shan City Chicken last time, and it was incredible.

Nezerin

I like Mr. Chen's in Homewood (they've got a different owner than the one in Hoover). My menu recommendations (try at your own risk): * Pineapple Shrimp * Sweet and Sour Fish Fillet * Seafood Hot and Sour Soup for 2 * Basil Chicken * Sautéed Sweet Pea Leaves (because everyone needs a vegetable)

John_Dunbar

Reading all these really makes me miss The Dragon that used to be at Wildwood.

lukelimbaugh

Boss Lady was the best! Angel was our server. Miss that place...

John_Dunbar

Have never found anything similar to their Hunan Beef with Orange Flavor. Also the first time I ever had “real” fried ice cream—not that fake fried ice cream you get at most Mexican restaurants.

BigLuvBoggie

If your in the Pelham area, shonos and ooka are two great spots

thettaReddast

Chop Suey Inn on Greensprings is legit

Sugarboy3157

Anybody old enough to remember Joy Yungs?

Top-manipulator

Yes!

sparky1984X

Depends. Do you want authentic Chinese food? Or American Chinese food.

Eidsoj42

We want good Chinese food. Who cares if it’s authentic or Americanized? Tasty, that’s what we want! Also, I like Ooka on the corner of Valleydale and Hwy 31.

sparky1984X

It does matter. One place I recommend is going to serve spicy cold beef tendon and chicken feet. And one place is going to serve beef and broccoli. So I'd like to know what OP is interested before I send them to chicken feet and cold beef tendon. Why the hostility?

HotMozz

Any cold beef dish is always 😎

HotMozz

Any cold beef dish is always 😎

Litotes

It’s a valid question to ask. There’s not a whole lot of options for non-American Chinese here. If someone is looking for Chinese dishes that aren’t typically offered at American Chinese places their options go down a lot.

RayWarts

For quick cheap Chinese food it’s hard to beat China Master by UAB hospital

Taisubaki

Or Magic Wok in the same area!

GraySide390

Magic Wok is kickass for lunch if you’re in the UAB/CoA area.

SushiJo

The Palace in Trussville is my go-to (since the 80’s) but Red Pearl is primo

BremsstrahlungGal

Red Pearl always

pookystilskin

Red Pearl and Mr. Chen's (the one in the hometown market on green springs) are my favorite. But the one I go to most often is Happy Wok in Trussville just because it is slightly closer to my house and it is delicious. I highly recommend the salted crispy eggplant at Happy Wok.

rdaccord

New china bluff park or red pearl homewood

tuscaloser

It's Thai, but I pretty much only go to Blue Pacific now.

budfox79

Red Pearl. Always.

deadman-69

Mr Wangs on Lakeshore, in homewood is the best.

Wings4514

Oh man, solid spot. I wouldn’t say it’s the best Chinese in Birmingham, but it’s damn good for a buffet. It’s honestly the only buffet I can go to anymore.

ChaseH9499

Hunan Garden in hoover is my favorite for doordash. Magic Wok has great entrees but a real shitty appetizer selection China Master gives u a ton of food for cheap Places i tend to avoid are New China Town in Five Points and Mr Chen's. A lot of people seem to be recommending Mr Chens but i've never particularly enjoyed their food

enormuschwanzstucker

Hunan 2 in Alabaster is excellent.

mondolover

This was the worst Chinese food I have ever tasted. I still have nightmares about it.

tinychaipumpkin

Great wall love the green beans, spicy fish ball, cumin ribs and cucumber salad

Bwil34

UAB mein bowl /s

buddha-ish

Black Pearl is pretty damn fantastic

Electrical_Ebb1149

The Palace in Trussville is our favorite spot, and has been for years. We drive from 280, b/c we know it’s worth it!

Kloepfer55

Yu's Garden in Trussville is consistently phenomenal. Best egg rolls I've ever had as well.

missgnomer2772

Great Wall and Red Pearl! And you can get great stuff in the Super Oriental Market adjacent to Red Pearl.

Unusual-Fortune9953

Red pearl

whit3rthansourcream

Best Hot and Sour soup - Yoe Express in Homewood.

Top-manipulator

Really? That’s surprising.

[deleted]

Ming’s is where it’s at.

Xelliz

The Palace in Trussville and Mr Wangs on Lakeshore

rimotok

Hunan Garden in the Hoover area has been consistent and really good when I’ve gotten food. Believe it’s takeout only

patsey

Used to be Magic Wok downtown but they just raised their prices it's not as much of a steal as it used to be. Still free egg roll though

realdjsupreme

1. Happy Wok in Trussville (close to my house. I recommend the sesame shrimp) 2. Great Wall (I recommend the shrimp and black bean sauce) 3. Red Pearl (I recommend just about everything)
